Neon bought U.S. rights to the Matt Spicer-directed dark comedy about a young woman who becomes obsessed with a social media star.
Neon, the fledgling distribution company launched by Tom Quinn and Tim League, is hitting the road with Ingrid Goes West, acquiring U.S. rights to the title after its world premiere Friday at the Sundance Film Festival. A source pegged the deal at $3 million.
The dark comedy stars Aubrey Plaza as the obsessive and unstable titular woman who secretly moves to Los Angeles to get close to Taylor Sloane, an Instagram “lifestyle guru” played by Elizabeth Olsen. After Ingrid adopts an identity for herself, she works to prove she’s BFF material for her Insta idol, until her facade is threatened by Taylor’s obnoxious brother Nicky (Billy Magnussen). Wyatt Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Pom Klementieff are also featured in the cast.
Matt Spicer makes his feature directorial debut with a script he co-wrote with David Branson Smith.
Star Thrower Entertainment and 141 Entertainment financed and produced the pic. Jared Ian Goldman, Tim and Trevor White, Adam and Robert Mirels and Plaza produced. Mary Solomon, Rick Rickertsen and Allan Mandelbaum executive produced.
Neon previously bought the Anne Hathaway starrer Colossal out of Toronto and is looking to build a slate. Quinn and League previously teamed with former partner Jason Janego on Michael Moore’s 2015 Toronto doc Where to Invade Next.
